Food processing and logistics center -completed

The content of the project is the implementation of a feasibility study for the construction of a food processing and logistics center at the location of the LCA-Süd in Fürnitz. Project status: completed.

In the project funded by the KWF Kärntner Wirtschaftsförderungsfonds, the market and the technology have been analyzed with regard to a food processing and logistics center, a concept for the operational organization or a building concept is to be drawn up and, in a final step, a business plan and a recommendation for action have been defined.

The project was carried out in two phases, with a termination or exit scenario having been defined after the completion of the first phase. The first phase provided information on whether the need for a center in Carinthia was big enough to operate profitably.

Description

Cultivation, production, processing, refining, distribution, logistics and disposal of food is by far the largest market in the world. The demands on the quality and shelf life of food are increasing rapidly. In addition, trade and consumers are becoming increasingly sensitive when it comes to the sustainability, naturalness and regionality of products. At the same time, around 200 million tons of food are wasted in Europe every year. The transport for further processing, especially between the northern and southern countries, and the associated pollutant emissions are constantly increasing. Small producers and regional companies in the food sector are supported, but internationalization measures are still difficult due to the size of the company. Mergers of such companies, such as cooperatives, are not always possible.

This situation calls for action. Innovative mergers and cooperation between companies in combination with the use of modern techniques and technologies can provide a solution to counteract the negative effects of global value chains. Above all, the interaction of regionally based companies from different areas (e.g. microelectronics, mechanical engineering, research and development, construction, food producers) not only has a positive effect on the environment, but also on value creation in Carinthia.

Goal

The aim was to develop a well thought-out concept for a logistics and processing center for food, which can be presented to potential operators.
